Week 1 West Briton Write-Up

Seeing as the West Briton only put the bit in the paper about the Stags beating the Eagles (would've been nice if they left that out!), the whole report sent to them is as follows:

The first week of the winter season in the Jolly's Camborne-Redruth Premier Pool League witnessed one of the biggest shocks in the league's history as the reigning Summer and Winter Champions, the Red Jackets Eagles went down to an 8-7 defeat on the opening night away to the White Hart Stags. Right from the start the Stags made their intentions clear as Adam Gilks potted well to defeat Gareth Ball and put the hosts 1-0 up. Eagles' Dave Metcalfe cleared up on his first visit in the second frame to tie the scores but further wins from Ricky Thomas and Paul Robinson, claiming the scalps of Adam Clift and Jamie Turnbull, made the score 3-1 to Dicky Bray's White Hart side. Rod Burrows, on his debut for the Eagles, defeated Mark Olds to pull the deficit back to one frame but Scott Kinsey claimed victory over Andy Jory to leave the score at 4-2 to the Stags after the first session. The Red Jackets side looked to be coming back into the match as they won two of the three doubles frames to bring the score back to within one frame at 4-5. Any thought of a comeback were dispelled in the last session though as further wins from Gilks, Olds and Thomas won three of the next five frames to make the score 8-6 and guarantee the victory before Turnbull won the last frame as scant consolation for the defeated Champions. Star of the night for the Stags was Adam Gilks who won all three of his frames, as did Eagles' Dave Metcalfe.

Redruth RBL was the setting as the newly formed Wasps took on the Sharks in the Redruth RBL derby match. The Sharks, fresh from their success of a top two finish in the summer league, started off as red-hot favourites but Rob Bevington's Wasps side certainly didn't let that faze them as they won the opening two frames of the night with Dan Wills defeating Rob Charman and Harry Stovold overcoming Liam Blenes to take a 2-0 lead. The lead was only shortlived though as Andrew Cowper, Phil Lane, Paul Murphy and Shaun Wills won the next four frames for the Sharks as they turned the scoreline around to lead 4-2 after the first session. Two further wins in the doubles for the Sharks left the Wasps with a mountain to climb as they trailed 3-6 going into the final session. The task was even harder after Murphy won to make the score 7-3 but Dan Wills made sure that the Wasps were still in with a shout as he beat Charman for the third time in the match. Liam Blenes ensured that the bonus point would be going to the Sharks though as he defeated Adam Lockwood to take the score to an unassailable 8-4 lead. Bevington put in a captain's performance for the Wasps in defeating Cowper but wins from Shaun Wills and Lane made the final score 10-5 to the Sharks. Although on opposing sides, it was a good night for the Wills brothers as both Dan and Shaun recorded three wins out of three as did Phil Lane.

Elsewhere there were big wins for the Tyacks Pythons, White Hart Bulls and Illogan RBL. John Smejkal's Pythons side, last winter's runners-up, overcame the challenge of the Lounge Bar Leopards, running out 13-2 victors and sending out a clear message that they're looking to go one better this season. The White Hart Bulls travelled to Troon and recorded a fine 12-3 win over Grenville Arms with Richard Ash, Lewis Saundry and Gary Stephens all winning three out of three. Sue Metcalfe's Illogan RBL won 11-4 away to the newboys at Rose Cottage, Chris Paton starring for the victors winning all three of his matches.
