Puzzle (Fairly Tough)

As I'm bored beyond belief...

What letter should come next in the sequence below, and why?

A A B C E H M ?

Re: Puzzle (Fairly Tough)

To me it looks like a fibonacci sequence in letter form, thus 'U' is the 21st letter of the alphabet

Re: Puzzle (Fairly Tough)

i understand that it is "u" because u double the empty letters in between. for example between C and E its 1 letter missing then between "E" and "H" its 2 and then "H" and "m" its four so the next is 8 spaces, but i dont get why the beginning has AABC as this doesnt link together with the rest or is it not supposed to?

Re: Puzzle (Fairly Tough)

Not strictly true Joe, as 8 letters difference would mean the answer was in fact V. When it's not.

Think using the letters confuses things! You have to look at the sequence in its original form (numerical), where each number is the sum of the 2 preceding it. So for example, 8 plus 13 = 21, 13 plus 21 = 34, then 55, 89 and so on... The A,A (or more accurately 0,1 in its purest form) are just there by definition, as the sequence has to have a set start point from which it can evolve.

Just a point of interest; nature actually produces some amazing working instances of the Fibonacci sequence, e.g the layout of a pine cone or branch configuration on a tree. Fibonacci sequence also ties in closely to the Golden Ratio, but probably not the place to discuss that!!

Re: Puzzle (Fairly Tough)

I'll take your word on that Mrs McGuire! No Google or anything of the sort, honest, we actually did it in school and for some odd reason I found it interesting and some bits just kind of stuck, a little like mushy over-cooked veg in the holes of a colander - strange but true!

Re: Puzzle (Fairly Tough)

I Had a dream last nite that i found a piece of amber and inside was this new species of spider. I accidently dropped the piece of amber and it broke, releasing this spider which then looked like a massive chicken spider and bit me. Next thing i know i grow spider legs and my legs have gone. but my problem wasnt that i had spider legs it was where would i put all these spare legs too? Where wud u put ur spider legs if this happened to you?

maybe I had 1 to many beers last nite :-)

Re: Puzzle (Fairly Tough)

You are not right at all I'm afraid, and therefore do not need to correct me TONKIN. Let uncle Andy explain. Look at the below: you're right in as much as saying that there is only one letter between C and E, two between E and H and four between H and M. The key word in that sentence though is between. As you so rightly demonstrate in another post, the letters between M and U are N, O, P, Q, R, S and T. Which total seven. So going on your faulty theory that there has to be eight letters between, you would need to include U as the eighth, meaning the answer would have to be V. So I'm afraid that not only was your theory wrong, the working out was wrong also. Better luck next time!

i understand that it is "u" because u double the empty letters in between. for example between C and E its 1 letter missing then between "E" and "H" its 2 and then "H" and "m" its four so the next is 8 spaces, but i dont get why the beginning has AABC as this doesnt link together with the rest or is it not supposed to?

Joe, if you wouldn't mind keeping your daily requirements out of the forums please...?
